Captain Planet would be proud. As the effects of global warming steadily become more and more prevalent, every major brand (auto companies mostly) is scrambling to come up with some new eco-friendly method of doing things. G-Shock is doing their part, with the introduction of their new “Green Collection”. Aside from the obviously striking green colorways in which the timepieces were dipped, G-Shock managed to prevent this from being a total gimmick by making small yet significant changes to their philosophy.
Firstly, is the packaging. We’re all familiar with the iconic aluminum cases that G-Shock typically uses, but for this outing they’ve literally “kicked the can” in in favor of a more natural box made from recycled paper. Although this obviously has no direct effect on the performance or use of the watch, the use of paper packaging cuts down monumentally on cost and pollution as the mass produced non-degradable aluminum cans will eventually prove to become nothing more than the main populace of a few landfills.
Next is the battery, or better yet, the lack thereof. G-Shock went in a radical direction when they decided to appropriately ditch the nickel-cadmium and zinc battery power in favor of solar. This isn’t be the first time GS has gone solar, but with the impending consequences of dumping over over 400,000 tons of batteries in the US alone, it’s never been more relevant.
While the move to construct a more eco-smart G-Shock is a step in the right direction, it’s still only a very small part in fixing the world pollution crisis. Hopefully GS keeps this up and drops more of these “Green” collections on us (maybe next time with biodegradable bands, just saying). But until then, you can cop one and help save the planet one tick at a time.
